“We can raise the talent bar, but you have to do something different. You can’t do what you are currently doing today.” Lou Adler
Recruitment is a key component to developing the right team to carry the culture of any work place. We’ve come up with a few points to get you thinking in the right way when it comes to recruiting the right people.
- Always employ based on WILL, not skill!! We get it the wrong way around!!
- Empower your staff to find people who would fit the team culture?
- Allow your leadership team to take new applicants out for coffee/lunch
- Ensure your staff would enjoy working with the candidate. 2 hour coffee test!
- Run a DISC profile on the candidates before you put them on.
- All staff MUST understand what TRUE leadership is and what it takes to lead!!
- Authentic Leaders ALIGN people around shared mission and values and empower others to lead, while serving all stakeholders and collaborating with others.
- Your interview should revolve around your culture, mission and values. They must understand it, buy in to it and respect it. Explain the mission of the business and step through the values that drive the business culture. A successful business requires these people to govern these standards.
- Embrace change. Everyone should read “who moved my cheese”
- Create a Cultural Agreement highlighting the business mission and listing the values that drive the culture. Have the staff sign it as their commitment to uphold, be accountable to and to govern those values which everyone BELIEVES in.
- Design a FLAT organisational structure. Never top to bottom. Always side by side
- Acknowledge good behaviour and always challenge counter-productive behaviour
- Set clear rules that are in line with your values. Eg. Dress, where to eat, when to eat, putting things away, cleaning, things not to say, etc.
- Have structured monthly meetings to recap on the month and applaud behaviours that meet business values.
- Your existing and new staff must truly believe in what the business can deliver and their purpose within the big picture.
- The success of the business dictates the prosperity of the staff, the stakeholders and the longevity of the brand. Business/Team first, individual success follows. Not the other way around.
- REWARD the staff when targets are met.
